Thomas Jefferson, political writings by
Thomas Jefferson(
)
15 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 2,023 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) is among the most important and controversial of American political thinkers; his influence (libertarian, democratic, participatory, and agrarian-republican) is still felt today. A prolific writer, Jefferson left 18,000 letters, Notes on the State of Virginia, an Autobiography, and numerous other papers. Joyce Appleby and Terence Ball have selected the most important of these for presentation in the Cambridge Texts series: Jefferson's views on topics such as revolution, self-government, the role of women, and African-Americans and Native Americans emerge to give a fascinating insight into a man who owned slaves, yet advocated the abolition of slavery. The texts are supported by a concise introduction, suggestions for further reading and short biographies of key figures, all providing invaluable assistance to the student encountering the breadth and richness of Jefferson's thought for the first time."--Jacket

A commentary and review of Montesquieu's Spirit of laws by
Antoine Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy(
Book
)
37 editions published between 1811 and 2009 in English and held by 916 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Montesquieu's political treatise (1752) The Spirit of Laws covers a wide range of topics in politics, law, sociology, and anthropology. Montesquieu advocates constitutionalism and the separation of powers, the abolition of slavery, the preservation of civil liberties and the rule of law, and the idea that political and legal institutions ought to reflect the social and geographical character of each particular community. In the present book, de Tracy brings a scientific approach to explaining the motives, and hence the observed consequences, of various kinds of government styles. He systematically works through many substantial flaws in Montesquieu's work, and delves into Montesquieu's logical gaps. His values of personal liberty, human equality, and intellectual pursuit show through in every chapter. His explanations of economics and how different government organizations do or do not contribute to economic welfare and personal liberty are clever and clear; and he is frank in suggesting that economics as a theoretical subject warrants illumination by others." Early American views on Negro slavery : from the letters and papers of the founders of the Republic by
Matthew T Mellon(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1934 and 1971 in English and held by 905 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Introduction: Mr. Mellon's illuminating presentation of the views of some of the founding fathers on slavery and the Negro exposes the raw nerve of American democratic society. If the central theme of the American Revolution was freedom and equality, the impact of that epochal struggle upon the black man was at best peripheral. The Declaration of Independence had dedicated the Revolution to the proposition that "all men are created equal." There were some who wondered whether that proposition would be applied to the ending of slavery, the greatest of all human inequalities

A summary view of the rights of British America : Set forth in some resolutions intended for the inspection of the present
delegates of the people of Virginia, now in convention. by
Thomas Jefferson(
)
94 editions published between 1774 and 2020 in English and held by 886 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This pamphlet is Thomas Jefferson's personal copy of A Summary View of the Rights of British America, which he originally drafted in July 1774 as a set of instructions for the Virginia delegates to the first Continental Congress. Jefferson argued that the British Parliament had no rights to govern the colonies, which he claimed had been independent since their founding. He also described the usurpations of power and deviations from law committed by King George III and Parliament. Jefferson was not present in the Virginia House when his draft instructions were debated and the House adopted a more moderate position than the one he articulated, but his friends had his instructions published in pamphlet form. The pamphlet was circulated in London, as well as in Philadelphia and New York, and helped to establish Jefferson's reputation as a skillful, if radical, political writer
